NYMSA lauds Buhari for signing LG autonomy law

Noble Youth Mass Support Association (NYMSA), an NGO, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting
to the law granting autonomy to Local Governments in the country.
Hon. Godwin Onmonya, the National Coordinator of the association gave the commendation in an interview with Newmen to commemorate June 12 Democracy Day celebration in the country.
According to him, the law will lead to a dynamic and active parliamentary democracy, which he described as “the bedrock for the delivery of dividends of democracy to the Nigerian people.
“Local government chairmen will always tell you that the reason they haven’t been able to evacuate overflowing drainage, light up the street and patch the pot-hole, is because they have no money.
“All of which has essentially killed the local government as a third tier of government over the years,” he said.
Onmonya said issue of joint account of states and local governments has been the bedrock of the debate over local government financial autonomy in the country.
He explained that the President’s action was a watershed and a catalyst in the development of democratic principle in the country.
“The signing into law of the bill for financial autonomy for local government by President Muhammadu Buhari is commendable.
“Local government administrators have long complained that the practice was undemocratic and also prone to abuse by governors.
“I firmly believe that mutual respect and trust among the three arms of government will contribute immensely towards the flourishing of our hard-earned democracy,” said.
The coordinator thanked the leadership and members of the national and state assemblies for the role they played in seeing to the reality of the law.
He also congratulated all the newly inaugurated 9th National Assembly members, urging them to represent their constituencies for the growth of democracy in the country.
