In graduate school the work load increases and students will find that they are expected to master two to three times the material that they were used to as an undergraduate. This can be intimidating to the point of overwhelming a student into paralysis. Following these tips should help you master your readings instead of allowing the readings to master you!

1. Read Strategically, Not Linearly. Reading for graduate school is different than reading a book for pleasure. When we read for pleasure we often start at the beginning of the book, reading carefully in a linear fashion. If you do this with your academic material, it will take twice as long and it is likely you won’t retain the right kind of information from the reading. Instead of reading linearly, read strategically. As an academic reader your job is to mine the text you are reading for information. Instead of cruising along the narrative, you need to dive in, find the information you need, and move along to the next stack of readings for class.

If you are reading a book this means you should look over the table of contents, then read the entire introduction carefully. In academic books, the introduction is where the author states all of their main points, the framework they will use, and an outline of what information will be covered in each chapter. Next, look over the last chapter. This is the conclusion, which will restate the main arguments of the author and will often contextualize these arguments in a broader context, suggest next steps, or speculate solutions or alternatives. From here you can go to the parts of the book you want deeper knowledge about. Individual chapters will be laid out similarly to the book structure with an introduction, and middle and the conclusion. Skimming the beginning and end of the chapter will give you the main points, then you can gather evidence by browsing the middle parts of the chapter. Remember, you are not really expected to read every single word of the book; your mandate is to understand the author’s main ideas, arguments, and be able to articulate why this discussion matters.

If you are reading a journal article, start by checking the name of the journal that published the article. This will key you in to the scope and boundaries that the article is working within. Next, carefully read the title and the abstract of the piece. A good abstract should clearly explain the main argument of the article, the kind of evidence the author uses, and a succinct conclusion, or what the author found out. Armed with this information, look over the introduction to see how the author is framing their work, paying attention to the citations they use. This tells you who the author is trying to be in dialogue with. Next, flip to the discussion section. Sometimes this is separate than the conclusion, sometimes not, depending on the disciplinary standards of the author and journal. Read the discussion and conclusion carefully. These sections will explain the author’s main arguments and the “why you should care” piece. Now you can go back through the article armed with the knowledge of where the author is leading you and browse over methods and results sections. Pay attention particularly to images and data visualizations. Note how these things relate to or support the discussion and conclusion sections you read.

Reading strategically instead of linearly will make you a more efficient and effective academic reader. Getting familiar with how different formats of writing are structured will give you the confidence and control to find the information you need in them more efficiently.

2. Take Notes! As you are reading strategically, you absolutely must take notes simultaneously. Otherwise it is guaranteed you will not remember the kinds of details you need to recall in class, in your paper, in your own research down the road. Develop a system of your own whether it is sticking a post-it note in the book and jotting something down, or opening up RefWorks or Zotero, or Word and throwing some notes down as you read. Whatever you do, remember that future you will have NO IDEA what present you is thinking, no matter how brilliant a thought it is. Be specific, include detailed citations and pages numbers for direct quotes so you don’t have to chase them later.

If you are reading as preparation for a class, make sure you are also jotting down 3-5 questions, observations, or provocations that you can use in class for participation. In grad school, everyone is expected to participate on a high level, so have something to say ahead of time to avoid the high-blood pressure that comes from your professor’s cold, hard stare.

3. Be purposeful. Being purposeful in your readings means that as you are moving strategically through the text you are also being deliberate about what you want to glean from the reading, what are meant to glean, and how this fits with the other readings and conversations you have had in class, along with your own life experiences. Ask yourself, “What is the author trying to say? Who benefits from particular social arrangements, and whom do they marginalize? Critical perspectives also question assumptions and values that are implicit in arguments: What values are underlying this work? Over the centuries Ramadan has retained its passionate spiritual meaning. The word “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic word for “Parched Thirst” and “Sun-Baked Ground.” It is meaningful of the hunger and thirst felt by those who spend the month in fasting and get benefits of fasting in the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice.

Each year Muslims spend the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observing a community wide fast. The fast of the month of Ramadan considered one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims who are physically able to required to fast each day of the entire month from sunrise to sunset. The month of Ramadan lasts 29 to 30 days depending on moon sighting and according to narration; Allah Almighty divides the Holy month of Ramadan into three Stages that’s known as Ashra of Ramadan.

Ashra of Ramadan

First Part Reflects Mercy of Allah (Rehmah)

Second Part Reflects Forgiveness of Allah (Maghfirah)

Third Part Reflects Safety from the Hell (Nijat)

The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: It (Ramadan) is the month, whose beginning is mercy, its middle, forgiveness and its end, emancipation from the fire (of hell).

No doubt, the month of Ramadan is full of blessings, mercy and forgiveness. It’s the best opportunity for all the Muslims to collect more blessings of Allah and pray for their forgiveness and to be saved from the Hell fire.

First Ashra of Ramadan - Mercy

First ten days of Ramadan are the days of Mercy and blessing and every Muslim must seek the Mercy and Blessings of Almighty Allah. It’s a special verse that usually recites the Muslims in first ten days.

The Dua for the first Ashra is:

Translation: “O! My Lord forgives and have Mercy and You are the Best of Merciful”

Second Ashra of Ramadan - Forgiveness

Second ten days of Ramadan day 11th to, day 20th consists of the second Ashra and its called Ashra or forgiveness. Muslims must seek for the forgiveness of Allah Almighty and regret for all their sins.

The Dua for second Ashra is:

Translation: “I ask forgiveness of my sins from Allah who is my Lord and I turn towards Him.”

Third Ashra of Ramadan - Safety

Third Ashra starts from 21st Ramadan and ends 29th or 30th Ramadan according to the moon. Third Ashra is known as Safety from the Hell it means Nijat. In the end of Ramadan is about seeking in Allah Almighty from Hellfire. Every Muslim must pray that from the safety of Hell fire. The Last Ashra is very important and superior. In this Ashra Lailatul Qadar also falls and many Muslims also practice Aitkaf (seclusion for prayers) in this Ashra and try to mixmize their prayers..
Aliyu Suleiman (Mr Sulay)http://www.blogger.com/profile/10506587519991584264noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7623390102844194185.post-31815310694668220092021-04-12T11:46:00.001-07:002021-04-12T11:46:55.533-07:00Things that validate and invalidate fasting
The Arabic word for fasting is
called "sawm" in the Quran. The
word sawm literally means "to
abstain". Chapter Maryam of the
Quran says that Mary the mother
of Jesus said "I have vowed a
"sawm" (fast) for the sake of the
Merciful, so today I shall not speak
to anyone." [Quran 19:26 ].
According to Shariyah , the word
sawm means to abstain from all
those things that are forbidden
during fasting from the break of
dawn to the sunset, and to do this
with the intention of fasting.

Purpose of Fasting
In chapter 2 verse 183 the Quran
says, "O you who believe, fasting is
prescribed for you as it was
prescribed for those who were
before you, in order that you may
learn taqwa (piety)".

Things That Invalidate the Fast
You must avoid doing anything
that may render your fast invalid.
Things that invalidate the fast and
require qadaa' (making up for these
days) are the following:
1 - Eating, drinking or smoking
deliberately, including taking any
non-nourishing items by mouth or
nose.
2 - Deliberately causing yourself to
vomit.
3 - The beginning of menstrual or
post-childbirth bleeding even in the
last moment before sunset.
4 - Sexual intercourse or other
sexual contact (or masturbation)
that results in ejaculation (in men)
or vaginal secretions (orgasm) in
women.
5 - Eating, drinking, smoking or
having sexual intercourse after Fajr
(dawn) on the mistaken
assumption that it is not Fajr time
yet. Similarly, engaging in these
acts before Maghrib (sunset) on
the mistaken assumption that it is
already Maghrib time.
Sexual intercourse during fasting is
forbidden. Those who engage in it
must make both qadaa' (make up
the fasts) and kaffarah (expiation
by fasting for 60 days after
Ramadan or by feeding 60 poor
people for each day of fast broken
in this way). According to Imam
Abu Hanifah, eating and/or
drinking deliberately during fast
also entail the same qadaa' and
kaffarah.

Things That Do Not Invalidate Fasting
Using a miswak to clean your teeth
does not invalidate fasting
During fast, the following things are
permissible:
1 - Taking a bath or shower. If
water is swallowed involuntarily it
will not invalidate the fast.
According to most of the jurists,
swimming is also allowed in
fasting, but one should avoid
diving, because that will cause the
water to go from the mouth or
nose into the stomach.
2 - Using perfumes, wearing
contact lenses or using eye drops.
3 - Taking injections or having a
blood test.
4 - Using miswak (tooth-stick) or
toothbrush (even with tooth paste)
and rinsing the mouth or nostrils
with water, provided it is not
overdone (so as to avoid
swallowing water).
5 - Eating, drinking or smoking
unintentionally, i.e., forgetting that
one was fasting. But one must
stop as soon as one remembers
and should continue one's fast.
6 - Sleeping during the daytime and
having a wet-dream does not break
one's fast. Also, if one has
intercourse during the night and
was not able to make ghusl (bathe)
before dawn, he or she can begin
fast and make ghusl later. Women
whose menstruation stops during
the night may begin fasting even if
they have not made ghusl yet. In
all these cases, bathing (ghusl) is
necessary but fast is valid even
without bathing.
7 - Kissing between husband and
wife is allowed in fasting, but one
should try to avoid it so that one
may not do anything further that is
forbidden during the fast.

Dr. Muzammil H. They memorize their course and can answer questions of the "academic" type. They do well in high school, sometimes even in college and often in the real world, but they just follow rules - even hidden rules like looking presentable, saying the right things to say at the right time. and be a good student among many. Educated people are caught up in a paradigm, but they thrive in it.

Smart people understand things more deeply. They understand the whys and wherefores of seeking out real knowledge. They can sometimes see how things work on a basic level and can solve both simple and difficult problems. These people may work within the "system" ( society) , but are often frustrated by the inability of that system to effect real and productive change because it is dominated by people who put their own needs ahead of those. of the system to which they belong.

Geniuses are yet another kind of people. They see it even more fundamentally. They see how more things relate to each other and can envision solutions that require a deeper understanding of the complexity and often the simplicity of the interactions that rule the world. Unfortunately, these people often do not speak the same language as those in power. These same people who did well in school and who understand how our system works.

Geniuses and intelligent people are often less egocentric because they understand that they are part of a world, rather than seeking to be its center. People who place themselves at the center of the world tend to offer mediocre and often destructive solutions to solving problems, because the complexity of those problems is blinded by their egos.

All people are needed. The intelligent people should continue to step outside the normal to develop better ways of existing for humankind, while the normal people should continue their duties as without them the world wouldn’t be build as it is now. If normal people would have more understanding for the intelligent, the world would certainly be a better place, but normal people don’t have deeper understanding of life so they live simple for themselves, vote for Trump and complain about immigrants taking their jobs. Education help these people to gain certain skills which helps them to land better jobs. But the mind to observe life and see what people need to progress won’t ever be there, so they keep doing what human has been doing through history and that’s living for your self and your tribe.

Aliyu Suleiman (Mr Sulay)http://www.blogger.com/profile/10506587519991584264noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7623390102844194185.post-83410743692143070562020-12-09T13:52:00.001-08:002020-12-09T13:52:00.640-08:00 BIDA POLY RECTOR ASKS STAKEHOLDERS TO ALWAYS STRIVE TO RESOLVE INDUSTRIAL CRISIS THROUGH PEACEFUL MEANS.
Bida Poly Rector advocates peaceful means to resolving industrial crisis

Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Dr. Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi today in Bida asked stakeholders in the educational and other sectors of the economy to always strive to resolve industrial crisis through peaceful means. He made this known during a one-day retreat organized for some members of the Academic Board and unionists at Bologi Event Centre, Bida.

The Rector said the event became imperative in view of the recent happenings in the institution wherein there was little industrial harmony until an intervention by the Ministry of Education.

He commended officials of the Ministry for adequately educating "the polytechnic staff on the essence of institutional governance and conflict management for a better educational set up." Dzukogi therefore advised staff and Nigerians present at the occasion to learn and apply basic knowledge acquired at the event cogently.

Speaking at the occasion, a retired Director of the Ministry of Education, Dr. (Mrs) Hilda Onyekwere, asked participants to always adopt 'quick response mechanism' to settle disputes, adding that "our leaders should always be quick in identifying problems and as well learn the best way to improve the system for enduring and lasting legacies."

She further advised the staff of the institution to respect constituted authorities and give the Rector the enabling environment to operate developmentally.

" Let our Chief Executives support staff development and welfare very well, let them rate competence above favoritism, let there be an open door policy and let there not be victimization of students and staff." Onyekwere further suggested.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the Federal Government has no intention of resolving its ongoing strike.

The allegation was levelled by ASUU in a statement by it Coordinator, Lagos Zone, Prof. Olusiji Sowande, on Monday.

Sowande alleged that the slow pace of negotiations with government was an indication that the government had no intention to end the over seven months strike.

He said this could be inferred from a statement by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, that government would call for a further meeting with ASUU after collating necessary data to ensure pending issues were bought to the negotiation table.

Sowande said it was appalling that the government team, having had series of meetings with the union was just collating vital data required to engage the union.

He said: “Government has deliberately been wasting time and resources of our union on meetings and engagements it was not prepared for.

“It is therefore not surprising that Dr. Ngige-led government team has not been able to return to negotiating table since the last engagement with our union on November 4, 2020.’’

ASUU urged parents, students and the general public not to be persuaded by Ngige’s statement that government could not afford to pay the conservative N110 billion for the revitalisation of public universities.

It said the Needs Assessment Report of 2012 provided evidences of the need to save public universities from imminent collapse.

Sowande said: “In fact the document stipulated that N1.3 trillion injected over five years would save the public universities from collapsing.

“Government’s failure to faithfully release the revitalisation fund over the years is a deliberate attempt to allow the public universities to collapse.”

According to him, only recently, government approved N5 billion as bailout fund to operators in the aviation sector to ameliorate the harsh realities of COVID-19 on their operations, adding that over the years, the Nigerian Government has spent over N1.5 trillion to bailout power generation and distribution companies to keep their businesses afloat despite the privatisation of the power sector.

Sowande said trillions of naira had been granted commercial banks as bailout funds to save them from collapsing, adding that if government could bail out private businesses for “business good” then Nigerian public universities deserved to be bailed out for “public good”.

He added: “In the interest of our students who have been at home for seven months, our union has shifted ground from the initial insistence of a release of one tranche of N220 billion revitalisation fund to demand for 50 per cent of one tranche (N110 billion) for government to show its commitment to revitalisation of our universities.

“This is a major reason government has not been able to return to negotiation with our union in the last two weeks.”

Sowande said the issues in contention go beyond ASUU’s rejection of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, for which the union had developed an alternative: University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

He reminded Nigerians that members of ASUU were on indefinite strike because of the failure of government to fully implement the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement and February 2019 Memorandum of Action, which stipulated timelines for the release of funds for the revitalisation of dilapidated infrastructure in public universities, payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, conclusion of renegotiation of 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, setting up of visitation panels to federal universities as well as underfunding and proliferation of state universities.

The Spokesman of the Command, Abdullahi Haruna, a DSP, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday.

Haruna disclosed that the suspect was arrested on August 13 in his home in Farawa Quarters in a raid conducted by men of Operation PUFF ADDER, sequel to the intelligence gathering.

He said: “The Command received information that the suspect confined his 30-year-old son, inside a garage in his house situated at Farawa Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state, for seven years without proper feeding and healthcare.

“On receiving the information, a team of Operation PUFF ADDER swung into action and rescued the victim.”

Haruna said the rescued victim was referred to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano for treatment.

He noted that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect incarcerated the victim over alleged drug abuse.

The spokesman added that the Commissioner of Police, Habu Ahmad, has ordered transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigations Department for discreet investigations.

The spokesman of the Imo State Police Command, Orlando Okeokwu, who confirmed the incident, said the corpses of the deceased had been deposited in the morgue.

Okeokwu said: “On Sunday, June 14, 2020, acting on a report received at the police station, operatives of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Nekede/Ihiagwa Division, moved to Room 19, Vic-Mic Lodge, situated around the JMJ bus stop, broke into the room and found the lifeless bodies of one Cynthia Obieshi and one Samuel Osuji.

“It was gathered that the said Cynthia visited her boyfriend, Samuel on June 13, 2020, and passed the night with him, but unfortunately, both of them could not wake up the next morning.

He explained: “N410 million was expended for palliatives, N85 million for electricity subsidy, while the remaining amount was expended for transportation of movement of task force members, movement of patients from the local government centres to the isolation centres, providing water, allowances for volunteers, security operatives, frontline workers and some members of the task force.”
Matane further explained that another amount of N290 million was expended for medicals to buy Protective Personal Equipment, drugs, capacity buildings for health workers, risk communication and travelling of health workers.
According to him, the state task force got N47 million as donations from individuals and corporate organisations, stressing that the fund has not been touched.
He said: “Everything we have done is from the budgetary allocation from the State Government.
“We have not received one naira from the Federal Government in terms of monetary donations.
“Only three trucks of rice and 700 jerrycans of vegetable oil from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
“The money received from donations from individuals and organisations is N47 million and the money is still there.
“We have not spent a dime from it.”
The Legislators, while dismissing the State Taskforce Chairman and the Commissioner of Health, said they were not satisfied with their response to majority of their questions.

The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved the limited use of malaria drugs for the treatment of Coronavirus Disease.
This was disclosed in a statement by the US Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday.
President Donald Trump had hinted of the use of the drugs, including chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, as potential COVID-19 treatments.
The statement on Sunday said the FDA had allowed them “to be distributed and prescribed by doctors to hospitalized teen and adult patients with COVID-19, as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible.”

The World Health Organisation says the message spreading on social media that Coronavirus Disease is airborne in incorrect.
The WHO headquarters in Geneva explained this on its official Twitter handle: @WHO.
The agency said the virus that causes COVID-19 was mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks.
It said: “These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air. They quickly fall on floors or surfaces.
“You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within one meter of a person who has COVID-19.
“You can be infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands.”
It, however, advised people to protect themselves by practicing physical distancing.
WHO tweeted: “To protect yourself, keep at least one meter distance from others and disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently.
“Regularly clean your hands thoroughly and avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose.”
According to the agency, drinking alcohol does not protect people against COVID-19 and can be dangerous.
“Frequent or excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of health problems,” WHO warned.

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has reacted to trending reports that he issued a statement saying every Nigerian with a Bank Verification Number will be paid N30,000 to stock up.
The report came amid speculations that the Federal Government was going to order a national lockdown of the country owing to the continuous spreading of the Coronavirus Disease.
The report quoted Adesina as having said the N30,000 was to enable those with BVN buy foodstuff for their homes before the lockdown.
Reacting in a terse statement on Saturday, Adesina said: “Fake news peddlers have concocted a statement, purportedly issued by me, saying FG will pay N30,000 to each Nigerian with BVN, to help them stock up before an impending national lockdown.
“Not me.
“The so-called statement is hereby disclaimed.”

The President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, has called on the Federal Government to immediately devise ways of providing relief for poor Nigerians whose daily livelihood will be affected as a result of the restriction on movement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lawan made the appeal against the backdrop of a meeting between the leadership of the National Assembly and some Ministers and Heads of Government Agencies on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to the Senate President, besides mulling a total lockdown of business activities in the country, a plan must be devised by the Federal Government through the release of funds specifically for the purpose of purchasing food and pharmaceutical supplies for ordinary Nigerians.
He warned that not making provisions ahead of time to address the basic needs of poor Nigerians may likely lead to more problems for the government, and less result in controlling the spread of the disease.
He said: “Our prayer is that we are able to overcome this menace of COVID-19 in good time, because it is really taking a toll on our lives.
“If we have to eventually shut down our country, then as a government we must be prepared to have some relief for the most ordinary people.
“As a government, we must find our own money to fund something for our people, because the United States of America that is talked about or the British Parliament is because this involves public funds.
“I’m not seeing anything at the moment targeted at providing some relief.
“If we lock up Nigeria today, then we will wake-up trouble, because majority of our citizens go to market everyday before they can get something to eat.
“So, don’t lock them up in their houses with a threat of disease and without food.
“We need to have something, a plan of some sorts, in addition to making sure we don’t lock up the farmers market, for example, where people can easily go and buy something, and of course pharmacies.
“We need to have some kind of supplies to people.
“I don’t know how we can achieve this, but we have to be ingenious.
“This is a time to think deep and wide, to provide for our people, in order for us at least to deal with this challenge at the moment.”
The Senate President in addition urged the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control to establish more testing and isolation centres as soon as more funds are released to it by the Federal Government.
He added that the Senate Committees on Appropriation, Finance and National Planning will oversight the NCDC on the strict application of the N6.5 billion to be released for the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.
Lawan said: “I believe that our Committees on Health, in the Senate and in the House, must be alert to this, when funds are released, so that they (NCDC) don’t just go on jamboree spending the money elsewhere, where we may not achieve this kind of spread that is extremely necessary.”
Lawan also assured the Executive arm of government that both Chambers of the National Assembly would be readily disposed, should the need arise, to work on the planned review of the 2020 Budget before the legislature reconvenes on April 7, 2020.

Ehanire, who disclosed this at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja, said Lassa fever was preventable and could be treated.
He said the disease could be treated when the patient presented himself early to a health care facility.
He said: “It is important that Nigerians maintain personal hygiene, environmental hygiene and food hygiene by storing their food properly to prevent the disease.”
According to him, there has been an increase in the number of Lassa cases reported across the country
He said: “As of January 28, 2020, 258 confirmed cases, 41 deaths have been reported in 19 states with majority of the cases being from Ebonyi, Edo and Ondo States.
“Giving the tropical climate in Nigeria, there is high risk of infectious diseases like Lassa fever because of the vector; this also is the case for other African countries with similar environment.
“Despite increase in number of confirmed cases, the overall case fertility rate for 2020 is 15 per cent compared with 2019, which was 20 per cent.”
The minister said while the country was moving to achieve single digit case rate, the ministry would continue to support response activities, surveillance and contact tracing in affected states.
The ministry would continue to support those activities through the deployment of rapid response team to improve case management.
Ehanire added: “The rapid response team has been deployed so far in five states of Ebonyi, Enugu, Kano and Borno and Ondo.
“We have sent medical commodity and personal protective equipment to the states"
